Kailua Ahupua’a and Kawai Nui Marsh Geology Tour
Signup now for the Kailua Ahupua’a/Kawai Nui Marsh Geology Tour:
A geology tour of the Kailua Ahupua’a and Kawai Nui Marsh will be conducted on Saturday October 6 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Dr. Scott Rowland, geology professor from the University of Hawaii, will take the tour group to th Pali Lookout, AMERON quarry and Na Pohaku of Hauwahine. He will explain how the Ko‘olau eruptive center was formed two million years ago and how the catastrophic collapse of the windward side of the shield volcano occurred. Dike formations and the quarrying operations by AMERON will be shown. Geological features of Kawai Nui will also be explained at Na Pohaku o Hauwahine as well as evidences of sea level changes.
The tour is co-sponsored by Ahahui Malama I Ka Lokahi, the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club, the Kawai Nui Heritage Foundation, and AMERON. Donations of $5 will be accepted. Malama Na Pohaku o Hauwahine – service project
The third Saturday of the month is our scheduled service project day to malama Na Pohaku o Hauwahine. We will meet this Saturday, Sept. 15th from 8:30am-12:30pm at Na Pohaku o Hauwahine located along Kapa’a Quarry Rd. (about a mile in from Pali Hwy.) to work on several different projects, weeding in the native plant garden, hauling in mulch, cutting hau and working in the wetland bird habitat. Dress in work clothes with covered shoes, bring gloves, a cutting or digging tool, your canteen of water and snack. Help Malama Ulupo Heiau
The WCCC women, students from the Hakipu’u Learning Center and other community volunteers have in recent weeks come to malama Ulupo Heiau. They have been clearing alien vegetation, working in the loi kalo, taking down alien trees and replanting with native Hawaiian plants.
You can support these efforts by coming to Ulupo Heiau (behind the Windward YMCA) this Saturday Sept. 15 from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm.
