Birds of the Marsh tour

Leader: Ron Walker, wildlife biologist

Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008   (8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)

Learn about Hawaii’s endangered waterbirds and the efforts to restore the Kawainui, Hamakua and Kaelepulu wetlands.

The tour will go to Hamakua wetlands at Creekside in Kailua, then to Kaelepulu. The third stop would be at Kawai Nui Neighborhood Park (Kaha) to look at the Kawainui Estuary and islets and, finally to Na Pohaku o Hauwahine to look at the volunteer created wetland bird restoration project.

This natural history tour is co-sponsored by Ahahui Malama i ka Lokahi, Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club, Kawai Nui Heritage Foundation and the Hawaii Audobon Society.

A $5.00 donation is requested. We will car-pool between sites.

Service Project at Kaha Native Plant Garden Nov. 22

You are invited to work with Ahahui Malama i ka Lokahi this Saturday Nov. 22nd from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm to maintain the Hawaiian Plant Garden at the Kawainui Neighborhood Park (Kaha Park). The garden demonstrates the growing of Hawaiian native plants in a xeriscape garden and how stream banks can be stabilized with native plants. Bring a weeder, gloves, water, snack or lunch and wear comfortable work clothing for the day. Call Ahahui at 593-0112 for more information and to sign-up.

Service Project at Na Pohaku o Hauwahine Sat. Nov. 15th

We will meet Saturday, Nov. 15th from 8:30am-12:30pm at Na Pohaku o Hauwahine located along Kapa’a Quarry Rd. (about a mile in from Pali Hwy.) to work on several different projects, weeding in the native plant areas, clearing alien plants, hauling in mulch, watering native plants and/or planting some native plants. Dress in work clothes with covered shoes, bring gloves, a cutting or digging tool, your water bottle and snack. Lo'i restoration at Ulupo Heiau

Please come to Ulupo Heiau on Saturday Nov. 8th from 8:30 am-12:30 pm on our Community Service Work Day. We will be weeding in the lo’i kalo, raking leaves, cutting Hau, picking up rubbish, etc. Bring gloves, water and snacks.  Call Kaimi Scudder at 593-0112 or email Malia Bird Helela <hemanumalia@hotmail.com> if you can join us on Saturday.
