Maunawili Kawainui Historical and Archaeology Tour, Sat. Nov. 2, 2013

‘Ahahui Malama I Ka Lokahi, the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club and the Kailua Historical Society will be conducting on Saturday November 2nd from 8:30am to 12:30pm a special Maunawili/Kawainui Historical and Archaeology Tour.  The tour will begin at Ulupo Heiau, in back of the Windward YMCA, proceed by car-pooling to the Matsuda country store and old Pali Rd., then to the area of Makali’i Valley and the last rice/taro growing sites in lower Maunawili Valley.  The next stop will be at the Trinity Christian Church between Auloa and Maunawili Rd. which was the location of the first stores, rice mills and poi factory in Kailua.  The final destination will be at the “Queen Liliuokalani Queen’s Retreat”, the former Boyd family and Irwin/Hedemann Estate.  Time remaining we may visit Kukapoki Heiau one of 11 heiau in the Kailua ahupua’a.  In addition to the natural and cultural histories of these areas, present and future concerns of protecting and conserving the water resources, restoring archaeological and agricultural sites will be discussed.

Archaeology and History Tour of old Kailua and Maunawili Valley on Sat., April 6th

Dr. Paul Brennan and Dr. Chuck Burrows will lead an archaeological and historical sites tour on April 6th from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. We will see Ulupo Heiau then car pool to “old Kailua”, Liliuokalani’s Retreat and Kukapoki Heiau in upper Maunawili Valley. Participants will learn how the early Hawaiians managed the natural resources of the Kailua ahupua’a and how Chinese and Japanese farmers grew their rice crops and engaged in truck farming in Kawainui and Maunawili. The tour is sponsored by Ahahui Malama I ka Lokahi, the Kailua Historical Society and the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club. A donation of $10 is suggested and reservations will be limited to 30 persons. We will car pool between sites. Participants should have good footwear and bring bug spray, water and snacks.

Community Service Project at Ulupo Heiau Sat. Jan.12, 2013

Join us on Saturday Jan. 12, 2013 at Ulupo Heiau to malama this wahi pana (sacred place). At 8:30 am we will begin our Oli Kahea and have an orientation to this mapele heiau. We will be cutting back the hau, weeding in the auwai, cutting weeds in the marsh and preparing lo’i for planting. Bring a cutting or digging tool, water bottles, bug spray and a snack. Wear shorts or long pants, gloves, hat and use sun screen. No slippers or open toed shoes! Wear tabis or footwear when working in the loi and shoes in the land areas. We will be pau by 12:00 pm, perhaps tired, wet and dirty but you will be thinking throughout the week on what you have done to malama this sacred place. Archaeology and Historic sites tour of Kawainui Marsh, Sat. Oct. 27th

Join us on an archaeology and historic sites tour of Kawainui Marsh on Saturday October 27 from 8:30am to 12:30 pm.  Tour leaders Martha Yent, State Parks Interpretive Program director and Paul Brennan, anthropologist will lead the tour group to the archaeological sites at Ulupo Heiau, Pahukini Heiau and Na Pohaku o Hauwahine.  They will show you archaeological features that still exist in these places and explain the importance to protect and conserve these sites for future generations. The tour is co-sponsored by the Ahahui Malama i ka Lokahi and the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club.  We will car pool between sites.

Donations of $10 will be accepted.  There will be a limit of 25 persons. Reservations must be made by calling Kaimi Scudder at 263-8008 or by email: email @ ahahui.net
