Kailua Ahupua’a Geology Tour,

A geology tour of the Kailua Ahupua’a, including Kawainui Marsh will be conducted on Nov. 4, 2017 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Dr. Floyd McCoy, geology professor from the Windward Community College, will take the tour group to the Pali Lookout, AMERON quarry and Na Pohaku of Hauwahine, by Kawainui Marsh. He will explain how the Ko‘olau eruptive center was formed two million years ago and how the catastrophic collapse of the windward side of the shield volcano occurred. Dike formations and the quarrying operations by AMERON will be shown. Geological features of Kawainui will also be explained at Na Pohaku o Hauwahine. Bring your cameras, sun screen, wear outdoor gear and walking shoes. We will car pool between sites. Once you sign up, we’ll let you know where to meet.

A geology tour of the Kailua Ahupua’a, including Kawainui Marsh will be conducted on Saturday, October 6th from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Dr. Floyd McCoy, geology professor from the Windward Community College, will take the tour group to the Pali Lookout, AMERON quarry and Na Pohaku of Hauwahine, by Kawainui Marsh. Public Lecture: “Glimpses of Primeval Kailua,” by Dr. John Culliney April 2, 2010
Title: “Glimpses of Primeval Kailua: Landscapes, Plants and Wildlife Before Humans Arrived.”
Dr. John Culliney, professor of biology at Hawaii Pacific University and contributing author of the natural history of Kawainui in the recent published book Kailua will give a lecture presentation “Glimpses of Primeval Kailua: Landscapes, Plants, and Wildlife Before Humans Arrived”, on Friday April 2nd from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the Faith Baptist Church on 1230 Kailua Rd. next to the Windward YMCA.
The next day Saturday April 3rd from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, Rick Barboza co-owner of the native plant nursery Hui Ku Maoli Ola, will conduct a tour of the botanical plant restoration sites in Kawainui Marsh. Site visits will be at Ulupo Heiau, Na Pohaku o Hauwahine, Kawainui Park and ending at the Hui Ku Maoli Ola nursery in Haiku Valley.
The botanical lecture and tour are sponsored by Ahahui Malama I ka Lokahi and the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club. A donation fee of $10 for the tour is requested. Ahahui is planning a general membership meeting and lecture by Dr. Floyd McCoy at Windward Community College on Friday, October 2, 2009 at Hale Akoakoa room 105. At 6:00 p.m. learn more about Ahahui Malama I Ka Lokahi, its programs and projects and meet fellow members, volunteers and others interested in learning more about Hawaii’s environment. Dr. McCoy will be talking at 7:00 p.m. about the Geology of the Kailua ahupua’a. This will be an excellent way to learn more before the Ahahui geology tour on Oct. 3rd. Dr. Scott Rowland, geology professor from the University of Hawaii, will take the tour group to th Pali Lookout, AMERON quarry and Na Pohaku of Hauwahine. He will explain how the Ko‘olau eruptive center was formed two million years ago and how the catastrophic collapse of the windward side of the shield volcano occurred. Dike formations and the quarrying operations by AMERON will be shown. Geological features of Kawai Nui will also be explained at Na Pohaku o Hauwahine as well as evidences of sea level changes.
The tour is co-sponsored by Ahahui Malama I Ka Lokahi, the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club, the Kawai Nui Heritage Foundation, and AMERON. Donations of $5 will be accepted.
