Signup now for the popular Kailua Ahupua’a Geology Tour to happen on Oct. 3, 2015:

A geology tour of the Kailua Ahupua’a, including Kawainui Marsh will be conducted on Saturday, October 3, 2015 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Dr. Floyd McCoy, geology professor from the Windward Community College, will take the tour group to the Pali Lookout, AMERON quarry and Na Pohaku of Hauwahine, by Kawainui Marsh. He will explain how the Ko‘olau eruptive center was formed two million years ago and how the catastrophic collapse of the windward side of the shield volcano occurred. Dike formations and the quarrying operations by AMERON will be shown. Geological features of Kawainui will also be explained at Na Pohaku o Hauwahine. Bring your cameras, sun screen, wear outdoor gear and walking shoes.

The tour is co-sponsored by Ahahui Malama i ka Lokahi and AMERON. Donations of $10 will be accepted. There will be a limit of 30 persons and reservations must be made by calling Ka’imi Rick Scudder at 263-8008 or via email at “email @ ahahui.net”.

Help restore a native forest at Na Pohaku o Hauwahine, Kawainui on Sat., Dec. 19, 2015

Please volunteer with us on Saturday, December 19, 2015 from 8:30 am – 12:00 pm to help restore the native forest at Na Pohaku o Hauwahine located along Kapa’a Quarry Rd. by Kawainui, Kailua. Our restoration efforts at this site include removing alien plants and restoring with native plants. We are also maintaining a native wetland bird habitat in the marsh where we remove alien weeds. We will be primarily concerned with weeding and cleaning up areas, and possibly do some new native plantings and watering. Earn community service hours. Wear work clothes, shoes, (no slippers!) bring work gloves, weeding or cutting tool, bug spray, water and snack. Contact Kaimi Scudder at 263-8008 or email: email@ahahui.net for more information.

Join us on our annual Native Plants of Kawainui Tour, Sat. May 2, 2015

Ahahui Malama i ka Lokahi and the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club are conducting a Native Plants of Kawainui Tour on May 2, 2015. We start at 8:30 am. Mark your calendar. The tour will be led by Rick Barboza of Hui Ku Maoli Ola nursery. We’ll car pool between sites. The tour will visit Ulupo Heiau ethnobotanical restoration site, and Na Pohaku o Hauwahine native forest and wetland restoration site along Kapaa Quarry Road, and for those interested, an optional tour of the Hui Ku Maoli Ola nursery in Haiku. Learn about what native plants exist in the Kailua area of Kawainui, what uses were made of these plants and what is being done to restore Kawainui with more native plants. Donation of $10 is suggested. Casual outdoor wear. Bring bug spray, sunscreen, camera, water. Wear good walking shoes. Tour limited to 25 persons, so sign up early.

Cultural and Natural History of Kawainui Marsh Tour, Sat. Sep. 7, 2013

Join us on a cultural and natural history of Kawainui Marsh tour on Saturday September 7, 2013 from 8:30am to 12:30 pm.  Chuck “Doc” Burrows, VP of the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club, will lead the tour.

This is an introductory natural and cultural history tour of Kawainui Marsh. It will include interpretive sites around Kawainui Marsh.

Travel back in time when Kawainui Marsh and Kaelepulu Pond (Enchanted Lake) were ocean bays and the first Polynesians came to the shores of the ancient Kawainui Lagoon, constructed their heiau, (sacred temples), fishpond and taro terraces. Chuck “Doc” Burrows will lead participants on the driving/walking tour. Learn about Ulupo Heiau, Na Pohaku o Hauwahine and the Kawainui Estuary at Kawainui Neighborhood (Kaha) Park. He will explain how these sites were used in ancient and historic periods, and fplans being worked on by community volunteers, State and Federal agencies to restore the health of the natural and cultural ecosystems of the marsh and the Kailua Ahupua’a.

The tour will start at 8:30 am and should be completed by 12:30 pm. A donation of $10 is requested. Community Service Project at Ulupo Heiau, Kailua, Sat. March 9, 2013

Join us on Saturday Mar. 9th, 2013 at Ulupo Heiau to malama this wahi pana (sacred place). At 8:30 am we will begin our Oli Kahea and have an orientation to this mapele heiau. We will be cutting back the hau, weeding in the auwai, cutting weeds in the marsh and preparing lo’i for planting. Bring a cutting or digging tool, water bottles, bug spray and a snack. Wear shorts or long pants, gloves, hat and use sun screen. No slippers or open toed shoes! Wear tabis or footwear when working in the loi and shoes in the land areas. We will be pau by 12:00 pm, perhaps tired, wet and dirty but you will be thinking throughout the week on what you have done to malama this sacred place. Please join with us on Saturday February 19th from 8:30 am – 12:00 pm to malama Na Pohaku o Hauwahine located along Kapa’a Quarry Rd. in Kawainui Marsh, Kailua. Our restoration efforts at this site are to remove alien plant invasives and replant with endemic natives. We are also restoring a native wetland bird habitat in the marsh where we are opening up more water areas for the native wetland birds. We will be primarily concerned with weeding in areas planted with natives and watering to keep the young plants alive and growing and possibly do some new plantings. Wear work clothes, shoes, (no slippers!) bring your gloves, weeding or cutting tool, plenty water and snack. Persons with chainsaws welcome!
