Maunawili Kawainui Historical and Archaeology Tour, Sat. Nov. 2, 2013
‘Ahahui Malama I Ka Lokahi, the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club and the Kailua Historical Society will be conducting on Saturday November 2nd from 8:30am to 12:30pm a special Maunawili/Kawainui Historical and Archaeology Tour. The tour will begin at Ulupo Heiau, in back of the Windward YMCA, proceed by car-pooling to the Matsuda country store and old Pali Rd., then to the area of Makali’i Valley and the last rice/taro growing sites in lower Maunawili Valley. The next stop will be at the Trinity Christian Church between Auloa and Maunawili Rd. which was the location of the first stores, rice mills and poi factory in Kailua. The final destination will be at the “Queen Liliuokalani Queen’s Retreat”, the former Boyd family and Irwin/Hedemann Estate. Time remaining we may visit Kukapoki Heiau one of 11 heiau in the Kailua ahupua’a. In addition to the natural and cultural histories of these areas, present and future concerns of protecting and conserving the water resources, restoring archaeological and agricultural sites will be discussed.
