Community Service project at Ulupo Heiau State Park, Sat. Apr. 11, 2015

Join us on Saturday Apr. 11, 2015 at Ulupo Heiau to malama this wahi pana (sacred place). At 8:30 am we will begin our Oli Kahea and have an orientation to this mapele heiau. We will be cleaning out the hau, weeding in the auwai, cutting weeds in the marsh and preparing lo’i for planting. Bring a cutting or digging tool, water bottles, bug spray and a snack. Wear shorts or long pants, gloves, hat and use sun screen. No slippers or open toed shoes! Wear tabis or footwear when working in the loi and shoes in the land areas. We will end by 12:00 pm. Community Service Project at Na Pohaku o Hauwahine, Sat. Feb. 21, 2015

Please volunteer with us on Saturday Feb. 21, 2015 from 8:30 am – 12:00 pm to help restore Na Pohaku o Hauwahine located along Kapa’a Quarry Rd. in Kawainui Marsh, Kailua. Our restoration efforts at this site are to remove alien plants and replant with endemic natives. We are also maintaining a native wetland bird habitat in the marsh where we remove alien weeds. We will be primarily concerned with weeding and cleaning up areas and possibly do some new native plantings. Wear work clothes, shoes, (no slippers!) bring your gloves, weeding or cutting tool, bug spray, water and snack. Ahahui will be doing strategic planning and capacity building in 2015 in order to better implement our mission to practice and promote a Modern Native Hawaiian conservation ethic. Birds of the Marsh Tour, Sat. Dec. 6, 2014

Join us on the annual Birds of the Marsh Tour

 
Leaders: Katie Doyle, wildlife biologist with Division of Forestry and Wildlife and Ka’imi
Scudder geographer with Ahahui Malama i ka Lokahi.
 
Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014 (8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)
 
Learn about Hawaii’s endangered waterbirds and the efforts to restore the Kawainui,
Hamakua and Kaelepulu wetlands.
 
The tour will visit sites around Hamakua and Kawainui Wildlife Sanctuaries, and Kaelepulu wetlands. Other stops will be at Na Pohaku o Hauwahine to look at the volunteer-created wetland bird restoration project and the Corps of Engineers project in the upper marsh.
 
This natural history tour is co-sponsored by Ahahui Malama i ka Lokahi and the Kailua
Hawaiian Civic Club. A $10.00 donation is requested. We will car-pool between sites.
